To what extent have the predictions in the “Brave New World” (BNW) come true?

Aldous Huxley has made many predictions about life in 2540 and a lot of them have come true already.

There was the first ‘test-tube’ baby bore using the method of in-vitro fertilization (IVF) in 1978, which is around 45 years after the publication. In the book, everyone is conceived in test tubes and incubated in bottles because there are no mothers. Humans are created in a laboratory and grown in an artificial life supporting machine. But nowadays in vitro fertilisation is very common among people as it helps those who have problems with conceiving in the normal way. About 4% of Denmark’s and 1% of America’s babies are born using this method.

Another true prediction of Huxley is ‘cloning’. It is a process of creating an identical copy of something. Around 1970’s to 1980’s some animals like cats, cattle, dogs, and horses were cloned for testing. In 1996, there was a famous sheep called ‘Dolly’ cloned by scientists. Cloning humans hasn't happened yet but human embryos have been cloned, and this may have a great impact on us. We can reverse our own aging process by cloning our cells. People needing organ donors will be able to clone their own organs. Everyone will be able to change his appearance without any risk and cure diseases such as cancer using cloning.

Researchers have concluded that hypnopaedia, a prediction of Huxley, is a good valid learning tool. One experiment was done to see whether learning a language during sleep is possible. A recording that is around 30 minutes long and consists of words of the language is played and repeated 15 times when the students are sleeping. The results are that most of them can remember all the words. If people listen to tapes about bad habits like smoking during sleeping, usually after a few weeks, they will shed their bad habits .

Huxley describes humanity as carefree and happy because there isn’t anything like family in the BNW. People are expected to have multiple partners. No one keeps emotional attachment with others because doing so will bring sadness. Sex is a social activity rather than a means of reproduction, and is encouraged to be practiced since childhood. Today, social attitudes are changing and people are beginning to behave in the way Huxley predicted. People have multiple boyfriends and girlfriends. Huxley’s prediction is coming true.

The prediction of people playing expensive sports has come true, too. People play sports like jet-skiing, horse-riding,and motorbiking. They are quite expensive. In the BNW, not many people liked walking. Therefore they travelled in rockets and aeroplanes, which is a convenient means of transport today. Taking Soma is a normal practice in BNW. The drug makes you contented and happy. In fact, people today do the same as they derive pleasure from drug use. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
