Composition Guidelines
Here are a few reminders about composition writing for students.

  • Learn from your mistakes. Read teachers' corrections and use resources such as the internet to help you work out how to get it right next time.
  • Read the question carefully. Pay particular attention to the part of the question which gives you instructions. Underline or circle each instruction. If a question has three or four specific instructions, each of these can be regarded as requiring a paragraph in the main body of your essay. Thus the question has automatically provided you with an outline plan. YOu must make sure that you pay equal attention to each section of the question and don't forget to answer any part of it, or you will lose content marks.
  • Pay particular attention to your audience. Remember that who you are writing for will affect your format, tone and register.
  • Remember to craft your introduction carefully. Regardless of the writing task, your introduction must contain some form of thesis statement - that is, some statement which sets out specifically your purpose in writing: what you hope to communicate or what you intend to prove. Your introduction should also ideally set out three or four main points which will support your thesis.
  • Remember that each paragraph should have ONE main topic which is stated in a topic sentence and that this should then be elaborated upon with relevant evidence and examples.
  • Resist the temptation to copy out phrases from the question. Use your own words.
  • Do not introduce new information in the conclusion. Restate your main points and state briefly what you hope your writing has achieved.
