What should I make notes on when reviewing a film?

Plot: Is it realistic or a fantasy? Is the story well-structured? Is it well-paced? Are there interesting plot twists? Is the story convincing? Does it make use of suspense, dramatic irony or foreshadowing?

Characters: Are the characters stock stereotypes or are they more nuanced individuals? Do the characters develop? Do they learn from their experiences? Do we sympathise with them?

Acting and characters: Is the acting convincing? Is it nuanced? Have the actors been type cast? Is their voice/ physical appearance suitable for the roles? How do actors use movement/ gesture/ facial expression/ voice/ timing etc.? Is the acting theatrical/ exaggerated/ understated? Is there evidence of method acting?

Dialogue: Does the film have memorable dialogue? Is the story told through what the characters say or is the plot driven by action?

Sound: How do sound effects and music contribute to the story telling and the atmosphere of the film?

Lighting: What is the film's colour palette? Is it brightly lit or dark? Does the film make use of contrast? Are some scenes lit in a special way in order to create a special atmosphere?

Set/ costume design: How does the use of props/ scenery and costume contribute to the story-telling and the tone of the film?

Cinematography: How has the director made use of the camera? Comment on any scenes which have used dolly shots, tracking shots, close ups, panning shots, jump cuts, split screen, superimposition etc. What effect do these shots and techniques have?
