Imagine:

Your father, who was the king, has suddenly died. People say he was bitten by a snake, but you aren't sure what really happened. Within a month, your uncle marries your mother. Then your friends tell you that they have seen your father's ghost - and he has a message for you!

So begins Hamlet, the most famous play in the English language. It's a murder mystery, a ghost story, and a tale of bloody revenge. It's also a gripping, powerful drama that explores some of the most compelling questions in life.


On July 4th and 5th 2008, the Marymount Annual Production team will present Hamlet in the MSS Auditorium. The play will be performed in English with English and Chinese surtitles. To bring the story to life for a modern audience, we have decided to set it in 1920s China, at a time when the chaos of feuding warlords might just conceivably have made it possible for a villain such as Claudius to have seized power.

Our audience will be treated to a visually stunning production with elegant period costumes designed by our students and a fabulous set constructed by staff and students of the school.

Marymount has a proud history of staging high quality drama. In recent years we have performed Twelfth Night, Much Ado About Nothing and the original musical Orpheus, and audience members frequently compliment students for their excellent acting, for bringing drama alive and for making Shakespeare accessible and fun. Tickets will be priced $50 for students/ children and $100 for adults, with a 10% discount for parties of ten or more. Tickets will go on sale in the school office in April.
