Effective drama depends on the tension created by interactions between characters. For this reason, Hamlet is too introspective to work well as drama.


The final scene of Hamlet is so deeply flawed – too dependent upon a complex sequence of accidents, too packed with bloodshed and too ‘crowded’ – that it does not fit in with the psychological sophistication and careful plotting of the rest of the play.


Hamlet’s character is too full of contradictions to be convincing to the audience.


Hamlet’s misogyny makes it hard for a modern audience to be able to relate to him.
