Romeo in a Rush

In fair Verona where our play is set
The Montagues all hated Capulet
And the reverse was also true –
The Capulets detested Montague.
What’s more, the servants of these lords
Were all too quick to draw their swords.
One day, across the city square
A Montague cried:

Sampson: Look who’s there!
A Capulet! I’ll bite my thumb
To show him that I think he’s scum.

Abram: Did you bite your thumb at me?
Draw your sword, slave, then we’ll see
Which side is better. Aren’t you set?
Are you afraid of Capulet?

Sampson and Gregory: We serve the better man.

Abram: You lie.

Tybalt: Draw your swords – you both shall die.

Chorus: The servants fought; their lords rushed out
To take part in the bloody bout.

Montague: Give me my sword. I have the right
To join in when my servants fight.

Capulet: Bring me my broadsword. I’ll fight too.
Death to every Montague!

Prince: What’s this? Stop fighting – straight away!
What is the meaning of this fray?
This is the third and final time
You’ve filled our streets with violent crime.
Hear my command – my word is law -
I will not stand it any more:
If ever again you cause such strife
You’ll pay the forfeit with your life.

Chorus: Meanwhile, on the edge of town
Romeo was feeling down.
Benvolio asked

Benvolio: How now? What news?
Why has Romeo got the blues?

Romeo: I am in love, but Rosaline
Has said that she will not be mine.
She’s even sworn that she’ll stay chaste.

Benvolio: Good heavens! Really? What a waste!

Romeo: She’s going to become a nun.

Benvolio: Then she’ll miss out on all the fun!
Take my advice – listen to me
There's plenty more fish in the sea.

Romeo: But Rosaline! I can’t forget her.

Benvolio: You will once you meet someone better.

Clown: Excuse me, gentlemen, can you read?
My master told me I should speed
To all the households in the town
That on this note are written down.
But I’ve a problem – it’s so absurd –
I cannot read a single word.

Benvolio: Didn’t you ever go to school?

Clown: What do you take me for, a fool?

Romeo: Let’s have a look – the Villefiori,
Mr. and Mrs. Montessori, Signor Vincenzo,
Signor Grimaldi Lord and Lady Garibaldi
And – oh my goodness – Rosaline!
Oh heavens! It must be a sign!
Tell me what this list is for.

Clown: It’s for a party. Door to door
On all these guests I have to call
Lord Capulet’s going to have a ball.
If you are not a Montague
Then come and have a drink or two.

Romeo: If Rosaline is there, I’ll go.
I’ll wear a mask. No one will know.

Benvolio: It’s quite a risky thing to do
Romeo, you’re a Montague.

Romeo: Well, if they work out who I am
Before they draw their swords, I’ll scram.

Chorus: Longing for Rosaline, Romeo went
To the party where he spent
The evening standing in a corner
No youth has ever looked forlorner.
But suddenly his eyes were met
By the sweet eyes of Juliet.

Romeo: Has my heart loved? Forswear it, sight!

Inever loved until tonight
Young lady, say – will you be mine?
I am a pilgrim at your shrine.

Juliet: Pilgrims should devoutly pray –
But you can kiss me anyway.

Nurse: Madam, your mother calls

Juliet: Oh hell!

Until we meet again, farewell.

Romeo: Who is that girl?

Nurse: That’s Juliet
The daughter of Lord Capulet

Romeo: She’s beautiful.

Nurse: Your hope’s forlorn.
Her hand in marriage has been sworn
Paris is the man she’ll wed.
Forget her – or you’ll lose your head.

Chorus: Meanwhile, Tybalt recognised
Romeo, whom he despised.

Tybalt: Uncle, uncle, a Montague
I’ll grab my sword and run him through!

Capulet: Don’t start a quarrel, not tonight;
I want a party, not a fight.

Chorus: So it was that Romeo set
His heart upon young Juliet
While Rosaline was cast away
(Young men often act that way;
They swear true love but they are fickle –
All they want is slap and tickle).

Romeo: I think I’ll go and pay a call

On Juliet. Her orchard wall

Is easy enough for me to scale
And then I’ll see her without fail...

Now I’m on the other side
I’d better find a place to hide.
Is that my love? Oh yes it is!
Juliet! How about a kiss?

Juliet: This is a very dangerous place
What if my kinsmen see your face?
They know that you’re a Montague.

Romeo: To you alone I shall be true!

Juliet: Spare me the speeches, Romeo!
There’s just one thing I want to know.
Do you love me? Say you do
And through the world I’ll follow you.

Romeo: Oh Juliet, you know it’s true.
I’ve really got the hots for you.

Juliet Romeo, how you make me blush!
But I think we really shouldn’t rush:
Let’s get to know each other slowly
And build a love that’s deep and holy
Let’s wait a while and let’s take stock
Of...What the heck! By nine o’ clock
This morning you will hear from me.
Before that time you’d better see
A priest. Be sure to find some way
To make this day our wedding day.
I’ll say I’m going to confess
I’m sure my folks will never guess.

Chorus: To Father Lawrence Romeo shot
He said

Romeo: I want to tie the knot.

Fr. Lawrence: I’m glad to hear it. Rosaline
Will make a goodly wife and fine.

Romeo: Rosaline? Oh, father, no!
I’m through with her.

Fr. Lawrence: Can it be so?
Then who is it you love instead?
Who’s the girl you want to wed?

Romeo: It’s Juliet that I adore.
This afternoon at half past four
Or five if that should suit you better
We’ll come and see you, then I’ll wed her.

Fr. Lawrence: Is Juliet the latest squeeze

Who's made you wobbly at the knees

If so, before you're passion's spent

I'll join you in the sacrament

Of marriage. This is quite a shock

I'll see you here at five o clock!

Chorus: The wedding went ahead as planned.
Romeo took Juliet’s hand -
A happier couple you never saw.
Alas, it wasn’t long before
Their joy was turned to dreadful woe.
In tragedies, it’s always so.
That very evening in the street
Who should Romeo chance to meet
But Tybalt, brandishing a sword
Pugnacious, and a little bored

Tybalt: Come let me fight you, Romeo

Romeo: There’s something that you ought to know
I love you as I love a brother.
I will not fight you. Find some other
Fool to try your fencing on;
Be friends with me or else be gone.

Tybalt: Won’t fight me, eh! You little chicken.
Afraid that I’d give you a lickin’?
I’ll fight Mercutio instead.
Mercutio, draw your sword. You’re dead!

Mercutio: Am I really? Try your best!
My sword will put you to the test.

Romeo: Stop! You know not what you do!
Stop it! Stop it, both of you!

Mercutio: He stabbed me underneath your arm.
Because of you I’ve come to harm.
A plague on both your houses! Ay!
It’s time for me to say good bye!
I am a grave man, Romeo.
My life is over. Oh, me! Oh!

Romeo: Mercutio, I’ll make Tybalt pay!
I will not let him get away.
Though Juliet’s his mother’s niece
I’ll hear no talk of love and peace.
Tybalt, say your last goodbye.
Villain, you deserve to die.

Tybalt: Do you think I’m afraid of you?

Romeo: Take that!

Tybalt: Slain! By a Montague!

Benvolio: Good heavens, Romeo – Tybalt’s dead!
This crime will fall upon your head.
Oh Romeo, what have you done?
The Prince is coming. You’d better run

Prince: What’s happened here?

Benvolio: Your kinsman’s dead
Tybalt, who killed him, would have fled
But Romeo stopped his escape
And slew the villain for justice’ sake.

Prince: Then Romeo is banish-ed
If he comes back – off with his head!

Nurse: Oh, Juliet, it breaks my heart.
Your hopes have all been torn apart.

Juliet: Sweet nurse, how come? Is Romeo dead?

Nurse: It’s worse than that – your husband’s fled.
Your cousin, Tybalt, on his sword
Was killed, then Romeo went abroad.

Juliet: I’ve lost all hope – I’m filled with woe
To think that my sweet Romeo
Could be a murderer and take
My cousin’s life. My heart will break.

Lady Capulet: My daughter, dear, I see you’re sad
About your cousin’s death. The lad
Was not much older, dear, than you.
No wonder you are feeling blue.

Capulet: But Juliet, be of good cheer.
The news that you’re about to hear
Is bound to turn your grief to joy.
A wealthy, handsome, noble boy
Called Paris wants to marry you.

Juliet: Paris! He will never do!

Capulet: How dare you answer back. Such pride!
This Thursday you will be his bride.
You will no longer be a maid.
Your father won’t be disobeyed.

Chorus: To Friar Lawrence Juliet ran.
She said to him:

Juliet: Oh father, can
You rescue me? I’m filled with dread.
My parents say I have to wed
A man for whom I feel no love.

Fr. Lawrence: Don’t be afraid, child. God above
Knows that you are a faithful bride.
I have a cunning plan. To hide
You, death will lay you low
Just till we’ve brought back Romeo.
Drink this. You’ll fall into a sleep
That looks like death. Your folks will weep.
Then you’ll wake up, two days from now,
Still faithful to your wedding vow.

Juliet: I’m so afraid! What if I wake
Inside the tomb and cannot break
The door? Oh, will I suffocate?
Will I face a fearful fate?
I’ve got no options – that’s the catch.
Oh well, here goes! Down the hatch!

Lady Capulet: Oh Juliet! Asleep, my dear?
What are you doing lying here?

Capulet: Shouldn’t you be in your bed?
Juliet? Oh God, she’s dead!

Chorus: Juliet was taken to a tomb;
Her body lay there in the gloom
Awaiting Romeo, her knight
To rescue her and set things right.
While Friar Lawrence wrote a letter:

Fr. Lawrence: Your wife is hiding – come and get her.

Chorus: He sent this message straight away.
Sadly, the letter went astray
And Romeo got word instead
That Juliet, his wife, was dead.

Romeo: My love is dead! My hope’s been ripped
Apart – so I’ll go to the crypt.
Paris! Tell me why you’re here.
Who said you could interfere?

Paris Juliet’s dead and you know why.
Her grief for Tybalt made her die.
Now you must face your maker too.
I’ll draw my sword and run you through.

Romeo

You fool – it’s time for you to die!

Paris

You’ve killed me! Juliet, goodbye!

Romeo

I’ve brought some poison along with me –
- And now, for all eternity
We’ll be united. Come, sweet death!
'I have breathed my final breath.

Juliet: What, Romeo, here in the tomb?
I think you have returned too soon.
You cruel fates, how can it be
You’ve stolen my love away from me?
Was there poison in this cup?
He hasn’t left a single drop.
A dagger, then? Yes – with this knife
Juliet will end her life.

Fr. Lawrence: Oh heavens, I have come too late
To rescue them from their sad fate.

Lady Capulet: Our daughter!

Capulet: Oh my God!

Montague: My son!
How is it that they came undone?

Prince: Tell me why this pair are dead.
Speak true or I’ll chop off your head.

Fr. Lawrence: These two were married secretly.
Juliet didn’t want to be
Married a second time. She hid
By feigning death. What Romeo did,
I guess, was come into the crypt
Before he knew the plan. He slipped
Some poison into his mouth. His life
Thus ended, then his three-day wife
Woke up and, through her suicide
Found peace here, by her husband’s side.

Prince: Your families have both paid a price
for all your feuds. Take my advice:
Your enemy should be your friend
From this day forth, your fight must end.
Since no one has known greater woe
Than Juliet and Romeo.

Dear Sir, I am writing on behalf of Children Need Us, a Hong Kong-based charity which raises funds for disadvantaged children in Vietnam. In a letter to the Hong Kong Post which was published on 1st April, Simon Pang criticized our organization and expressed support for a protest against our annual fundraising treasure hunt. I am writing to respond to his criticisms. First of all, Mr Pang claimed that Children Need Us does nothing for Hong Kong people. However, this is not true. Our organization co-operates once a year with Hand-in-Hand to organize a charity fun run. Hand-in-Hand is a small local charity which raises money for child welfare projects and initiatives to help disabled people and to support the children of drug addicts in Hong Kong. Children Need Us helps to provide logistical support and resources for the Hand-in-Hand fun run. Last year this event raised $345,000. Mr Pang claims that there is a greater need for charity overseas than locally because of the increasing gap between the rich and the poor in Hong Kong. While it is true that the wealth gap has widened in Hong Kong in recent years, the Hong Kong governemtn already provides support to the most disadvantaged members of our society and Hong Kong has a well-resourced social security system and public health service. This is not the case in many other countries. Mr. Pang’s claim that Vietnamese children are well looked after by their government is mistaken. In fact, Vietnam has a much lower GDP per person than Hong Kong and as a result the government there does not have the economic resources to provide even a basic social safety net for its citizens. According to UNICEF statistics, there are 16000 street children in Vietnam, 20000 children in the country are forced to work in prostitution, and approximately 40000 children in the country are destitute. According to Nguyen Hung Tanh a professor of sociology at the National University of Vietnam in Hanoi, ethnic minority groups in the country receive little help from the government and the poorest people in the country do not even have basic necessities such as food, clean water and shelter. Mr. Pang also criticized our organization’s work to provide education for Vietnamese children on the grounds that the country has a free education system. While this is true, it only covers children from the ages of 6-11. After that, education is very expensive and girls in particular are deprived of secondary education; 70% of school drop-outs in the country are girls. Families in Vietnam often do not have the means to provide for their children due to a range of social problems, and about a half of the children in primary schools are malnourished. In fact, there are children in Vietnam as young as ten who have to work as flower-sellers or shoe-shine boys either because they have been abandoned or because they have to raise money to support their families. These children earn two or three dollars a day if they are lucky. Children Needs Us attempts to address these problems through its Child Nutrition Initiative. This project seeks to improve the health, psychological well-being and academic performance of children in deprived rural areas of Vietnam by providing daily in-school food including soya milk and vitamin fortified biscuits as well as giving students food to take home to their families. 90,000 primary school children and 60,000 family members benefit from this initiative. CNU’s biggest fund-raising event in support of this programme is our annual treasure hunt. This event is a fun family day for participants which also raises participants’ awareness of the hardships faced by less advantaged people in the developing world. This year the event raised over three quarters of a million dollars. Despite Mr. Pang’s criticisms, Children Need Us does very worthwhile work helping underprivileged children in Vietnam, and the local community in Hong Kong also benefits from our efforts. Through fear and intimidation: Who does he frighten or intimidate? How?
Fear and intimidation take a very important role in helping Richard to gain power, audience are fully aware that Richard’s acts are actually highly hypocritical and very often without grounds, but his evil proceeds are unchecked because men are weak and gullible, and they dare not protest against Richard.

In Act III Scene 4, Richard successfully created fear by his accusation of Hastings. Richard accuses Queen Elizabeth and Mistress Shore of using witchcraft against him, causing his deformity, and even showing his deformed hand to the council members as ‘evidence’. When Hasting replies ‘If they have done this thing’, it creates an opportunity for Richard to accuse him of treachery. He immediately commands Lovell and Ratcliffe to execute Hastings. The scene is short but very dramatic, and unsurprisingly, the council members are unable to deal with Richard. It is clear that Hastings is falsely accused, and yet, not even Lord Stanley, a close friend of Hastings, is willing to stand up and questions Richard’s authority. Any offender should have the right to be tried before execution, not even the king could challenge the power of the law. However, Richard is acting as if he’s the ultimate ruler of the country, and no one dares to question his authority. He finally orders that “the rest that love me, come and follow me”. This simple line alone creates enough fear, for the other council members know that if they attempt to help Hastings or even rebuke Richard, they will end up being executed.

Also, in Act III Scene 5, Richard indirectly intimated the Mayor, for having Catesby to deliver the head of Hastings, saying that it is the head of the “ignoable traitor”. Although the Mayor hasn’t spoken a word about the head, it is surely disturbing and frightening to have a prisoner’s head delivered during a conversation. I personally find Richard and Buckingham’s counterfeit of fear and pretending to be beset by enemies in that scene to be over-the-top. If Richard does treat Hastings as friend, he wouldn’t have chosen to kill him, and even beheaded him. And yet, the Mayor doesn't seem to have seriously doubted about their irrational fear, but he is definitely surprise that Hastings has attempted to murder the Lord’s Protector. The beheaded Hastings effectively intimidates the Mayor, and he is thus willing to speak for Richard, to convince the public that Hastings’ death is justifiable, and Richard has done the right thing to protect the country from a terrible traitor.

In Act III Scene 6 we also learn that the scrivener knows all about Richard’s plot, because he is told to copy Hastings’ indictment six hours before his actual death. However, the scrivener also acknowledges that no one but a fool would dare to speak the truth. Richard uses fear and intimidation to shut the mouths of the intelligent, those who are able to reveal his hypocrisy and plots. He makes use of human weakness to manipulate others, to prevent them from interfering his gaining of power.
Through lies about his enemies and rivals: Who does he lie about? What does he say about them?Richard tells lies about his enemies and rivals so as to clear his opponents and increases his chance to get in power. He first lies about Queen Elizabeth and Lady Shore for their witchcraft who has made his hand deformed. Clearly, Richard is deformed since childbirth and it certainly not because of the women’s curses that have made him suffer. His lies are solely to make Hastings fall into the trap, so that Richard could easily accuse him of treachery.

Buckingham then tells lies about Hastings to the Mayor, saying that Hastings is the ‘subtle traitor’ who has ‘plotted in the council house to murder the good Lord of Gloucestor’, and when the Mayor questions ‘What, had he so?’, Richard quickly responds by saying that he and Buckingham are not Turks or infidels, and are not against the form of law. He tries further to convince the Mayor by telling him his initial plan – let the Mayor speak to Hastings first and hear his own confession before his death, but the plan is altered because Ratcliffe and Lovell find Hastings too dangerous for the princes that they had him beheaded first. With this, the Mayor finds Richard and Buckingham highly convincing, and is persuaded to explain to the citizens that Hastings was executed in a just cause.
Not only does Richard tell lies about his rivals, but also his family members. Richard sends Buckingham after the Mayor to address to the crowd too, inferring the ‘bastardy of Edward’s children’. Richard makes up lies about Edward, saying that he is a bastard and illegitimate to the throne because he is conceived when his father was at war with France. With this lie, Richard is also slandering his mother of infidelity. With Buckingham alleges the illegitimacy of Edward and his children, because Edward was previously engaged to Elizabeth Lucy and had a child with her before he married Elizabeth Grey. All these wild lies are to increase his power, and to justify his need to be the king of England. From here we can see that Richard uses unscrupulous methods to gain power.

Through feigning innocence and virtue: How does Richard make himself appear both morally and legally worthy of the crown? Consider his appearance and actions as well as what he says.
In Act Three, Richard plays many roles with relish, as a frightened innocent, a grieving friend, the righteous Lord Protector and the pious churchman. He tries to create an image as if he doesn’t want the crown and not interested in politics at all, in order to set a contrast with his late brother Edward, so as to win more support from the citizens.

He firsts counterfeits fear and pretending to be a grieving friend of Hastings. His appearance in Act III scene 5 is deliberately to convince the mayor that he has been under attack, by wearing ‘rotten armour’ and looking ‘marvelous ill-favoured’. It is clear that Richard wants to bring out the message that he is only an ordinary, humble soldier who does not care a thing about politics. It surely raises the concern of the Mayor as he enters the room to find the prince not in glamorous suit. This further reinforces that Richard and Buckingham have been attacked by the traitor Hastings.
Richard even pretends to be kind and loving, for he ‘laments’ over Hastings’ death.

To make himself appear both morally and legally worthy of the crown, he puts on a ‘play’ in Act III scene 7, appears to be flanked by two bishops, reading from a prayer book. Richard feigns reluctance to hear the deputation from Buckingham and the citizens. With Buckingham’s comments, praising Richard who is ‘not an Edward!’, who would not ‘loll on a lewd love bed’, but ‘on his knees at meditation’. Physically, Richard has the image of a virtuous king, who would study the scriptures and have two clergymen to ‘stay him from the fall of vanity’.

To be morally worthy for the crown, Richard creates an impression of a humble, wise and gracious individual who prefers religion to politics, and so he continuously rejects the deputation, with the excuse that he is meditating. Then he says that he is unworthy to be king because of his ‘poverty of spirit’ and ‘defects’. Buckingham then urges him to think again, because Prince Edward is a bastard and cannot possibly succeed his father, who is also illegitimate. After some lengthy hypocritical dialogue between the two, Buckingham threats to ‘plant some other in the throne’ if Richard does not capitulate, and haughtily declares that he will ‘entreat no more’. Richard still appears to be reluctant to taking the throne, and it is only after Catesby who urges the ‘sweet prince’ Richard to ‘accept their suit’ when Richard sighs about having ‘a world of cares’ thrust upon him, and gracefully gives in and is saluted with his new royal title. He agrees to be crowned the next day at Buckingham’s suggestion.
To emphasize the idea that Richard is not the one who desires to be the king, he reminds Buckingham that ‘even when you will, since you will have it so’, putting the responsibility on him.

Richard could have easily seized power by force. Why does he go to such great lengths to manipulate the mayor and the citizens so that they offer the crown to him?
Richard is being cautious when getting into power and gaining the throne. He tries to manipulate the mayor and convince the citizens that he is worthy for the crown so that he doesn't have to worry about facing a rebellion in the future. He wants to appear as a legitimate king. Besides, Richard does not only want the throne, but to sustain and consolidate his power. Convincing and manipulating the citizens would win their hearts so that they would respect Richard in the future, and respond to whatever he demands. Although this may seem to be an intelligent thing to do, it is soon proven in Act IV that no one respects Richard at all, and he has to make people work for him by intimidation and bribery, as in the case of Lord Stanley and Tyrrell.

Dear Sirs,
I am Terry Lau and I am a secondary school student. I am writing on behave of the computer club to ask you to sponser us. We wanted $40000 for buying eight robots and will enter a robot football competition with that.

About our club, it aims to increase the members computing skills and give them a valuable experience in programming, building computers and organizing computing events. And we are the winners of the Soccer Challenge 2007. Also, we were organized the first inter-school computer expo and designed an online assignment grading system for Choi Po Shan Secondary School.

Our robot was made of steel plastic and 40cm tall. We can identify its position on the field and move without hit other objects. It can also kick the ball without any problems. It has a 360 degree camera and can see the whole area with it. It also looks forward to having a single frame camera. It operates with an on-board computer and has a ball steering device so it is independent.

This project have taught knowledge on how to build computers and also skills such as working in a group. It has also taught us knowledge that cannot be applied in books and real life situations. If Singson join the project, you can involve in a project that supports young people in the community and have very good public relation. The game is played by eight robots in two teams of four-on-four and they are all controlled by being attached to a central computer.

The festival is a forum for presenting technology projects that is participated in by schools and community groups. Proposals are invited for display boards, demonstrations and stalls. People who joined include students, parents, school personnel, education sales representatives and technology industry representatives so if we can join this festival we will make friends and may be able to organize a joint-school project. Also, you will have many benefits such as in 2002 there were 28,000 visitors and in 2006 there were 68,000 visitors and the increased number of visitor will give you exposure to a wide audience. And we will list you in our official programme. According to Simon Lo who visited our school, your company can also apply for a patent for the robots. Because of urgent deadline we need the money by May 13th because the deadline for application is July 13th and confirmation is needed two months before the deadline so we hope that you will quickly decide to give us $40000. It will be very glad if you supported us. If you have any questions, you can ask us.
